Rising dramatically from the Cheshire plain, the Ridge covers 230 sq km of rolling hills and escarpments, punctuated with glacial meres and mosses. Stretching from Frodsham in the north to Malpas in the south, this is rural Cheshire's magical landscape; rich in history and wildlife, and linked by the popular Sandstone Trail.
Tarporley is strategically positioned at the very heart of the Sandstone Ridge.

In June 2021 the Sandstone Ridge was shortlisted for designation as a National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – AONB) by Natural England. If, as we hope, it is awarded National Landscape status, it will doubtless attract much more interest and many more visitors to the area, with Tarporley's visitor economy benefiting as a result. Exciting times!

Running the length of the Sandstone Ridge, the Sandstone Trail is a 55km footpath connecting Frodsham with Whitchurch. Tarporley is located less than 2km from the midpoint of the Trail and is an ideal staging post and watering hole for walkers on the Trail.
