The village of Tarporley dates back to the Domesday Book and is listed as 'Toepeli', which has been interpreted to mean 'a pear wood near a hill' in Old English. This history is referenced today at Tarporley CE Primary School as they have a pear tree as their school emblem. It is recorded in the Domesday book as having a population of 8 households, putting it in the smallest 40% of settlements, but is now one of the largest villages in the Cheshire countryside. Tarporley is also home to the oldest surviving hunting club in England, Tarporley Hunt Club. The club formed in 1762 and still meets today at their headquarters, The Swan Hotel, which has been on Tarporley High Street since the 16th century.
